I have been craving some good ice cream for a while now and recently came across an advertisement for a specific ice cream famously known as “aiskrim gula apong”. When doing my research, I found a place in Kuang, not so far from Rawang, that sells it, so I decided to visit it. The store is called M Ice Cream Sungai Buloh @ Kuang and is located on the roadside beside Wadis Gusto.
The store manager, Mr Raza, was the only one on duty the day of the visit. He was friendly and fun to talk to! As there weren’t many customers when I visited the store, the manager and I shared a few stories while enjoying our ice cream. The store is small, and they have limited seating. Most customers visiting the store when I was there had their orders taken away.
When I got there, I asked Mr Raza for suggestions on the best item to order in his store. He suggested us the Red Velvet Apong Mix and Chocolate Apong Mix. All the ice cream prices are the same depending on the serving size. A small one is RM 3.70, a medium one RM 4.70 and a large RM 6.70. To go along with your ice cream, you can choose up to 2 free toppings (chocolate rice, peanut, nestum, cornflakes or cococrunch) with every purchase. To add on honeycomb, it will be RM 5 and chocolate chips, RM 1.
The Red Velvet Apong Mix is sweet and has a unique and robust honey-like taste. The Chocolate Mix Apong, on the other hand, had a rich flavour complimented by chocolate imported from Belgium. Red Velvet would be an 8/10, and the Chocolate Mix a 7/10.
I also tried the Gula Apong Ice Cream with strawberry syrup, cornflakes and chocolate rice toppings, and Gula Apong Ice Cream with Gula Apong syrup, cornflakes, and cococrunch toppings. The strawberry syrup cooperated well with the Gula Apong giving a fruity jam-like taste with a touch of traditional sweetness. Due to my personal bias of my dislike towards any jam, I did not enjoy this one much, but you may be able to! On the other hand, the ice cream with the Gula Apong syrup was tastier for me compared to the one with the strawberry syrup. This one had a tangy and sharp flavour from the original flavour, topped off with their original Gula Apong syrup.
After having my first bite of those ice cream, I realized that the taste of Gula Apong is almost like regular brown sugar, but with a little more “umphh”. What I loved most about this ice cream is when you consume them with the topping provided. The crunchy bites and the sweetness of Gula Apong were just out of the world.
Apart from those, this is the menu of M Ice Cream, Kuang. They are very flexible with their choices. You will be allowed to customize or mix and match any of the flavours and toppings provided.
