Crunch crunch crunch on their crispy, finger-lickin’-good chicken!
Last Tuesday, the YummyAdvisor team went on a little trip to Saujana Utama during the evenings to give Kabin Hitam a short visit! We went there around 4:30 in the evening as we wanted to avoid the traffic, considering that the merchant’s operating hours were around the time when people started going home from work.
The location of merchant was quite far from where we were situated. The journey to our destination felt like a little trip as both of us (my colleague) were unfamiliar with the road and the surrounding. But nevertheless, we enjoyed our visit to Kabin Hitam, especially the food! Which is the whole point of this trip, so let’s get down to business, shall we?
Nasi Lemak Kabin
One of the main dishes of the evening was the Nasi Lemak Kabin, the merchant’s own rendition of the traditional nasi lemak. Upon laying eyes on the dish, I was intrigued by the two pieces of fried chicken served on the same plate as the nasi lemak. The chicken looked crispy and not oily at all. The nasi lemak, of course, contains a small bowl of sambal as well, roasted nuts, fried anchovies, two slices of cucumber, and a slice of sunny-side-up egg on top of the rice. What I got out of the Nasi Lemak Kabin is that the sambal tastes sweet at first, but once you swallow it down, you can taste the spiciness of it in your throat. The chicken, on the other hand, is crunchy on the outside and has tender and juicy insides (which reminds me of KFC’s fried chicken—but better).
Mee Goreng Signature
The second main dish is the Mee Goreng Signature, which is fried yellow noodles with a slice of fried chicken, as well as a slice of sunny-side-up egg. The chicken is fried exactly the same way as Nasi Lemak Kabin, with a crunchy outer texture but juicy and tender insides. The taste of the noodle is a tad spicy, however, and as it is cooked with yellow noodles, you can expect a bit of an aftertaste from it. Hidden by the yellow noodles, the dish also contains fish cakes and diced chicken.
Twister
If the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word twister is curly fries, then you’ve got it wrong. The kind of twister that was served to us by Kabin Hitam is a warm, crunchy tortilla wrapped around crispy chicken strips with some lettuce and slices of tomatoes drenched in sauces such as cheese and ketchup. The wrap, as mentioned before, is crunchy and not like what you’d get from shwarmas or kebabs. The chicken strips were also crunchy and crispy; you can tell that this merchant's cooks are consistent with how they cook their chicken.
Roti John Single
Next up is the Roti John Single, which is a mini version of the typical roti john that you would normally get from the market. Generally, a roti john is an omelette sandwich with minced meat, egg, and chopped onion mixture poured into a frying pan and then split long, soft rolls are pressed into the mixture. But Kabin Hitam’s version of roti john is made a bit differently, replacing the minced meat with a slice of crispy chicken wrapped around a thin layer of fried egg, salad, tomatoes, and loads of sauces. My colleague tried this roti john for the first time in his life and gave it an 8 out of 10!
Roti Telur Goyang
Lastly, for dessert, we were served with a plate of a thick slice of chocolate bread, four scoops of coconut or kaya jam at each corner of the bread, and topped with a slice of half-boiled egg in the middle of the bread. As I could not eat eggs due to allergy, my colleague had no problem consuming them for himself and described the combination of kaya jam, half-boiled egg, and chocolate bread as “weird but in a good way.” The mixture of the coconut or kaya jam and the bread is sweet, but together with the egg, it makes the whole taste of it richer in an odd way.
In short, despite the rain and the long trip, we had an amazing evening at Kabin Hitam. One thing that I would come back for is definitely its twister! You should too!
