During the weekend, Team YummyAdvisor found their way to Mohammad Chow - Gombak; a hidden gem located slightly above a hill right beside Petronas Lingkaran Karak in the Gombak district. As their name suggests, this restaurant serves delicious Chinese Muslim cuisine. You will be required to take a short hike or drive up a small hill from a narrow passage that starts from the petrol station to get to the restaurant.
This restaurant has ample space, a fantastic ambience, beautiful surroundings, and delicious food! Although the price is a little above average, the quality and taste of the food compensate for it. If you were to hike a little further up the hill after the restaurant, you would see their permaculture farm and farm animals like rabbits. Isn’t that exciting?
They have been operational in this location for the last 8 months. They also have 2 other outlets at Ampang and Damansara Perdana. Although the owner was busy rushing to get some things done, he gave my team and me the best service under the circumstances. The restaurant's operation hours are from 5PM to 11PM on weekdays, and 12 PM to 3 PM, 5PM to 11PM on weekends. Thursdays are their rest day.
When our team asked the owner what's their special dish, without any hesitation, he pointed out a set meal called “Set Gumbira”, which consists of 7 of their best dishes. This serving is priced at RM 199 and is perfect for a group of 4 to 6 people.
Trust me, it doesn’t only look delicious. It tastes that way too. Let’s get right into it!
The “Set Gumbira” consists of the following.
- Siakap Nyonya,
- Salted Egg Squid,
- Fish Fillet Sweet & Sour,
- Butter Floss Prawn,
- Marmite Chicken,
- Kam Heong Lala,
- and Kailan Ying Yong.
The food was absolutely delicious. The Siakap Nyonya is sea bass fish cooked in a Chinese-Muslim cuisine style. At first glance, it seemed really spicy. The spice level for the Siakap Nyonya was just right on the spot. It tasted a little spicy with a hint of sour taste, giving the perfect throat hit. The fish was well-fried, and the meat was delicately tender. The sweet and sour fish, on the other hand, the fish fillet sweet and sour, was just sweet. The fillet was crunchy on the surface and soft from the inside.
I personally loved the butter floss prawns. They were crispy and tasty. The salted egg squid was also crispy on the surface but soft and juicy insides. The Kam Heong Lala especially was also excellent. They were a little spicy and chewy. Finally, the marmite chicken had a robust taste which may cause you to get a little queasy after a while. Despite that, the chicken was well cooked. The meat was a little sweet due to marination, but the outside was as crispy as chips.
Concluding it all, my personal favourite from those 7 dishes were the Siakap Nyonya and butter floss prawns. Ala-carte menu is also available in the restaurant.
Mohammad Chow – Gombak is a restaurant where you will have a good time and food with your family. Remember, they will be on break from 3PM to 5PM if you visit them during the weekend. So, plan your visit time accordingly. Everybody needs a break every now and then, don’t they?
